Investigation of Ambassador Bridge contractor results in citation for the deadly fall of a painter working on the bridge

Seaway Painting cited by state for Ambassador Bridge accident that sent worker falling to his death

DETROIT (WXYZ) – 7 Action News had learned that MIOSHA has issued multiple citations against a Livonia paint company following January’s accident in which painter Kent Morton fell to his death from the Ambassador Bridge.

Seaway Painting, L.L.C. has received 13 “serious” citations and must pay $67,000 in fines.

Other companies have been cited as well. Also cited were Walter Toebe Construction, Rauhorn Electric and Soil and Materials Engineers. The total penalties amount to $107,900.

Morton, 28, left behind a large family including a daughter and another on the way.

Morton’s body was recovered in March. 7 Action News reported at the time that Kent was not wearing a harness while working on the bridge.

This is not the first time Seaway has been cited by the state.

As 7 Action News reported in January, Seaway has faced eight “serious” violations and 22 “other than serious” citations over the last five years. Seaway was fined $5000 for the “serious” violations.

MIOSHA, the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration, investigates workplace accidents.
