DETROIT — The family of Ambassador Bridge owner Manuel “Matty” Moroun has increased giving at a time when the company that operates the bridge is in a heated battle with the state over a competing span.
The Detroit Free Press reports Monday that the Moroun family has sponsored college scholarships and events in downtown Detroit.
Moroun’s wife, Nora, says it’s an effort to “make a little difference” at a time when the area is experiencing hardships.
Some say the efforts should not take attention from dilapidated property Manuel Moroun owns, including the long-closed Detroit Central train depot.
Moroun also has been fighting transportation officials over their plans for a new bridge to Canada.
Former state representative Steve Tobocman says philanthropy is welcome, but “examples of bad corporate citizenship” should not be ignored.
